Spring 2019 Unit 2 Fruit and Gifts of the Spirit

Lesson 12 Love: The Most Excellent Way

May 19, 2019

Love governs those who follow Christ faithfully.

The Lesson Overview

Even many people unfamiliar with the Bible have heard at least parts of 1 Corinthians 13. Yet amid these powerful words about love, we might be inclined to forget Paul’s message: The exercise of spiritual gifts means nothing unless those gifts are exercised in love.

A major abuse of the gifts by the carnal Corinthians was that the gifts were being exercised with a prideful spirit. Pride hindered the proper practice of the gifts, blurring their purpose and effectiveness. Today’s lesson reminds us that love is the governor of spiritual gifts. It is the crown of all motives. Love binds the souls of men to God and to each other. There can be no true service for God without love.
